My Words Are Few

Autumn Leaf in the Rain My words are few, but my thoughts are many this month of October. At the close of the 2013 growing season for our greenhouse and outdoor plants, as well as the close (or the genesis, I cannot tell yet) of the wellness incentive program at my full-time job has brought me to little words. “Exhaustion” would be one word to sum up how I feel. Dean & I took a week off work and visited our Missouri family in the Kansas City and Branson/Springfield areas. Change of scenery did us both good. Still need more time to unclutter my mind for next growing season’s plans and next year’s wellness incentive plans for 4,000 employees.
Dean & I have been deep cleaning. Our trash dumpster has been overflowing for every pick-up this month. And more junk to get rid of. Functional items are going to the Goodwill. How do we collect so much unwanted, unnecessary items? We border on being hoarders, and that habit has been broken this month. We are shedding the old like the trees this autumn. We prepare our house now for the autumn holidays. Gourds and pumpkins replace the color near the front porch as most of the leaves have fallen off our trees and our tropicals are housed inside. The rains come to water the earth this week, with the last of the leaves to mulch the ground underneath. How soon will a blanket of snow cover those leaves? It’s that time of year, gourds and pumpkins decorate the stores and houses in our neighborhoods. They are autumn, and create the autumn ambiance. Which variety do you see based on the above chart? Our gourds are huge and colorful! This is Deanna Greens And Garden Art’s first year growing them, and it has been most enjoyable! We have one tall teepee trellis of gourds with 4 different varieties, plus ornamental eggplant which looks like a gourd. The vines have not dried up yet, so we sit tight and not pick yet. Patience! Even if the fruit has stopped growing, the vine provides nutrients to the gourds’ shell to thicken and strengthen. When the vine dries up, then the gourds are ready for harvest. We hope to have gourds available for a couple of farmers’ markets in October and November. Artisans beware, gourds are a great canvas for creative arts and crafts! And many are used for practical purposes. “Every house there is surrounded by a garden, and when the gourd dries in the sun, it hardens and it can be used for everything,” artist Chisseko Kondowe says. Herb Harvest

Our dill is daintily charming, and so fragrant. Yesterday evening we harvest our 1st crop, and will put in a 2nd crop after the 4th of July holiday. Wild sunflowers and sprigs of dill fill a green vase today. Our chef son-in-law will use this 1st crop of dill to make pickles with his homegrown cucumbers. Maybe a jar or two of Hannahway Farm sun pickles are on our way?! The patriarch spice shoppe owner says in Europe dill is used in just about every dish. I love it with my baked fish and potato salad dishes. The 3rd crop of dill will go in early autumn, with plans to take as show-n-tell farm products to the City of St. Charles preschool classrooms Farmer Dean and I visit in November. Our 1st crop of basil screams pesto! Served with veggies, chicken, bread, and pasta, I cannot wait!

This week’s other farm chores include straightening and cleaning the screenhouse, putting extra pots and trays together in somewhat orderly fashion, and throwing broken items in the recycle pile. One recycled dresser is filled with “tea room” stuff, as well as a recycled tile-top table put aside for our meal and snack times. Another recycled dresser holds pots of blooming geraniums. We are making space in the screenhouse in case we need to move our plants to this cooler side of the greenhouse structure. Last year at this time the heat wave and drought was well underway in Missouri. The extreme heat required us to water two times a day, early morning and early evening. Our plants were housed under the shelter of shade trees in our yard while the greenhouse reconstruction plans were being modified until autumn when the heat subsided. The lack of rain has not been an issue this spring and early summer, thank you God! The growing gourd plants will go into the ground this weekend.

A Sign That Spring Is Here

The photo says it all!  Deanna Greens and Garden Art is very excited to be at the Lake Saint Louis Farmers’ Market every Saturday morning starting April 14!  And if you like to get out to a local winery, you will find us at the Chandler Hill Vineyards in Defiance on most Sunday afternoons selling our beautiful perennials, houseplants, herbs, and starter vegetable plants.

The Summer Night Sizzles And An Old Man’s Winter Night

"The summer night sizzles" was my wedding night in pictureques Hermann, Missouri ... dining, wining, and pining at The Cottage.

 My 96-year old grandfather will spend a many winter’s night alone.  Grandpa Earl lost his beloved wife of 52 years this August.  On Christmas Eve Grandpa Earl will be in the company of his youngest grandson, my brother.  I think my brother knows Grandpa’s heart … this poem brings me back to thoughts of Grandpa … 

An Old Man’s Winter Night by Robert Frost

All out-of-doors looked darkly in at him
Through the thin frost, almost in separate stars,
That gathers on the pane in empty rooms.
What kept his eyes from giving back the gaze
Was the lamp tilted near them in his hand.
What kept him from remembering what it was
That brought him to that creaking room was age.

Garden Art Creations

Garden art is an expression of one’s soul… Seeds packets, weathered hand trowels, a stalled tractor, the resting plow, pea shoots, sunflowers face the sun or lie their full heads to rest, rainbow reflections from the water-flowing sprinkler, dirt-cladded rocks, green garlic sprouts, worn ruts in the field road, sharp rows of green, bee’s visit to the flowering lavendar … all spiritual gifts to receive at the farm and share … an artist’s palette. 

So I have in mind to use my abundance of dried lavendar into soothing, aromatic soap for Christmas gifts and sell at the farmer’s markets this winter.  Bought some simple molds.  I thought to use creative ideas, and welcome yours. What do you use for your soap molds?  An antique or something contemporary?

Greenhouse Purchase

So a new adventure with a 1300 square foot greenhouse.  Plants and more plants. Tropicals, herbs, annuals, perennials, and annuals we try to make perennials cause they are gorgeous.  And we can do that with cuttings by placing in fresh potting soil or a cup full of water.

My husband and I want to convert to all organic methods, but steps are to be taken to reach that goal.  We will definitely use organic potting soil and fertilizers for our edible plants.  All pure and natural for the food intake of ourselves and our clients.  The tropicals are beautiful, so we will use the methods Peggy (our predecessor) has used for the past 36 years.  We think she knows some things and we could learn from her.  Like how to divide and repot a huge Boston fern or plucking the blossoms of lush dragon-wing begonias (even though they are so colorful on these gray November days and we hope they will produce even more blossoms and be even more full come spring!)  Experience comes wisdom.  We yield to age.  Dean & I are getting there ourselves …
